Summer Internship: New York Presbyterian Hospital - New York City

Image
By Ashlee Venema Live from New York City! I am spending my summer at New York Presbyterian Hospital (NYP)! NYP is an extremely complex system that has two academic medical centers, Weill-Cornell Medical Center and Columbia Medical Center, servicing patients on a daily basis. The medical schools employ the physicians, while the hospitals employ the rest of the clinical and non-clinical staff. The system has 10 campuses, including a children’s hospital, psychiatric hospital, two community hospitals, and a number of outpatient clinics that add to this total. Additionally, we are in the middle of expanding the Regional Health Network that serves the community health needs of patients across the state and in surrounding areas outside of Manhattan proper. I am spending the majority of my time in hospital operations at the Westchester Division, which represents the stand-alone psychiatric hospital serving patients with mental illness nationally and internationally. We have 270 beds t

Summer Internship: Grinnell Regional Medical Center

Image
By: Bailey Price Greetings from Grinnell! This summer I have been fortunate to serve as the administrative intern at Grinnell Regional Medical Center (GRMC) in Grinnell, Iowa. Todd Linden, president and CEO of GRMC, has served as my preceptor. GRMC is a private, not-for-profit, 49-bed community hospital. The hospital is affiliated with Mercy Health Network (MHN). GRMC’s status as one of eight “tweener” hospitals in Iowa has exposed me to the Medicare reimbursement challenges this category of hospital faces and the political advocacy many such hospitals engage in as a result. The internship application described the experience as an “all-access pass to the operations and leadership of a rural facility” and this has proven to be an incredibly accurate description! My internship experience actually began before the spring semester ended. In late April, I had the opportunity to accompany Todd and a GRMC board member to Washington, D.C. for the American Hospital Association (AHA) annual

Summer Internship: Mayo Clinic Health System

Image
By: Ryan Syverson Greetings to all my avid HMP blog readers out there!   I hope this post finds you well.   I am in my 7 th week of my 12-week-long internship at the Mayo Clinic Health System in Owatonna, Minnesota.   For those of you who do not have a clue where that is, the building is situated right off I-35 about an hour south of the Twin Cities.   I have been fortunate enough to do some traveling throughout the system.   Some of these experiences include attending regional meetings at “Mother Mayo” in Rochester and having intimate conversations with a small town mayor about the organization's commitment to keeping afloat a one-provider practice to address the health needs of the community of less than 2,000.   The administrative staff has been incredibly welcoming as they continually attempt to further my experience by involving me in the community.   Participation in events such as Have a Safe Summer, Relay for Life, and the upcoming Steele County fair have shown me t

By: Jordan Brelje Greetings from Chi-Town! At the time of this post, I have completed nine of my 12 weeks as an administrative intern at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago (Lurie Children’s). The organization has been serving pediatric patients for 130 years and cares for more children than any other pediatric hospital or system in the state of Illinois. Lurie Children’s was recently named the top children’s hospital in Illinois and 6 th in the country by U.S. News & World Report. The hospital boasts 288 all-private rooms and emphasizes its commitment to the patient-family experience with spaces such as the Crown Sky Garden, Family Learning Center, and even an in-hospital salon. There are also child-friendly elements woven into the design of the facility, such as the 12 th -floor fire truck cab (see picture), which was donated by Piece Manufacturing Company. I feel very fortunate to have been given a diverse set of projects to work on throughout my summ

Summer Internship: Hennepin County Medical Center

By: Anna Saxon Hello from the land of 10,000 lakes. I am spending my summer at Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC). It is a 455 bed, certified Level 1 Trauma Center, and designated safety net hospital located in the heart of downtown Minneapolis, Minnesota. Some exciting things have been happening around here lately: The US Bank Stadium, located two blocks away, was recently finished and is hosting its first event at the end of July. HCMC began a joint venture with MVNA, a community health services organization. A former Emergency Medicine resident completed his training at NASA, spent 7 months aboard the International Space Station, and upon his return, came and spoke about the priceless education he received in his time at HCMC. In addition to all of these exciting events, HCMC is in the middle of building a 377,000 square foot Ambulatory Outpatient Specialty Center, with a goal of improving access, enhancing operations, improving patient experience, and using the build
