Summer Internships: Iowa Health System

Image
By Tim Chwirka This summer I am completing an administrative internship with Iowa Health System’s corporate office.  My preceptor is Kevin Vermeer, the Chief Financial Officer, Chief Strategy Officer, and Executive Vice President of Iowa Health System. In my previous healthcare experiences, I have worked at small, rural hospitals and had the opportunity to be very involved in day-to-day hospital operations and have been very close to where patient care is being delivered.  From the corporate office, I have experienced a different perspective by getting a bird’s eye view of the healthcare delivery system.  At this level, I have had the chance to experience strategy and see how large initiatives are implemented throughout a healthcare system.  With all of the changes occurring in healthcare, it is a great time to be at this level and witness the strategies being implemented to change the way care has traditionally been delivered. My projects this summer have mainly revolved a

Summer Internships: Nationwide Children's Hospital

By Nic Rusher This summer, I have been fortunate enough to be working for Nationwide Children’s Hospital (NCH) in Columbus, OH. Although my summer is coming to a close and I only have one week remaining, I can honestly say that I could not have asked for a better place to work at, better people to work with, or a better experience for the summer. I have worked in many different departments, have gotten a wide variety of experiences, and gained invaluable knowledge from NCH executives that will undoubtedly help me for the future. Some of the projects I worked on include:   ·      Behavioral Health Services Strategic Plan ·      Surgical Robotic Program Business Plan ·      Neuromuscular Disorders Clinic Business Process Improvement ·      Human Resources Change Management ·      Volunteer for the Patient Move Team ·      Volunteer for the NCH Foundation / Children’s Miracle Network Telethon ·      Volunteer for the “96 Hours of Fun” Grand Opening Ceremonies ·      An

Summer Internships: University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics

Image
By Carol Ayangbile Hi all! My summer has been going very well at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.  I have been working on all things IRL-Iowa River Landing, the new multi-specialty outpatient clinic located in Coralville, IA right off I-80.  Starting the summer, I met Steve and Bonnie, the Administrator and Director of Nursing for IRL.  I’ve been working with Dr. Boutros, Steve, and Bonnie closely to accomplish a lot before the opening date of October 8, 2012.  I call them the dream team! They have given me several projects throughout the summer and allowed me to sit in on and participate in meetings and really gain insight to many operational and non-operational parts of administration. I also got to do a site visit at IRL and have a included pics, one is with the project manager.   I’m currently working on redesigning the triage process that General Pediatrics and General Internal Medicine will use at IRL, creating a pro forma for a Healthy Living Clinic concept

Summer Internships: Sanford Health

Image
By Derek Daly This summer I am doing my administrative internship at Sanford Health in Sioux Falls, SD. Sanford Health is the largest not for profit, rural healthcare system in the country, with 36 hospitals in South Dakota, North Dakota, Minnesota, and Iowa. My internship is with the Sanford Health Network in Sioux Falls, the division responsible for overseeing the network of critical access hospitals and rural PPS hospitals that Sanford owns, leases, or manages. Throughout the first half of my internship this summer, I have been exposed to a wide variety of experiences ranging from shadowing executives and attending high level meetings to attending planning retreats and board meetings. Two particular highlights of my summer so far have been spending three days shadowing the CEO of the hospital in Orange City, IA, and spending two days attending events surrounding the grand opening of our newest PPS hospital in Aberdeen, SD. The shadowing experience in Orange City allowed me to s
