Demi Oo – University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine (MHA '26)
Hello from the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine (CCOM) in Iowa City!
Brenton, Ramiro and I completed LEAN training through UI Healthcare
I’ve had the pleasure of interning with the Office of Statewide Clinical Education Programs (OSCEP), alongside my co-intern and incoming first year MHA student, Brenton Shrock, under the mentorship of Lynette Lancial, Associate Director of OSCEP and a proud UI MHA alum. Established in 1974, OSCEP is a department within the CCOM and plays a key role in coordinating community-based medical education and service initiatives across Iowa
Brenton and I worked on the July education board in the CCOM building
This summer, my main project has been developing the Iowa Medical Opportunities Directory—a statewide resource designed to support healthcare workforce recruitment and retention. To build it, I helped design and distribute surveys to hospitals, clinics, and private practices across Iowa, focusing on identifying open positions for physicians and advanced practice providers. My outreach emphasized key specialties such as general internal medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, general surgery, and psychiatry. Once compiled, the directory will be distributed to residency programs statewide and made available online to connect new graduates with in-state career opportunities and strengthen Iowa’s healthcare system. I am very excited to see a tangible product after all this work! Later this month, we will host a recruitment fair that brings together healthcare recruiters from across Iowa to engage with University of Iowa students and promote in-state career opportunities. It will be interesting to finally meet everyone Brenton and I have been corresponding with all summer.
In addition to my main project, I’ve had the opportunity to observe physician contract consulting sessions. These sessions involve detailed discussions between my preceptor and physicians to review and provide feedback on contract terms. Through this experience, I’ve gained valuable insight into physician responsibilities, termination clauses, negotiation strategies, and the structure of compensation and benefits packages. Besides activities with OSCEP, I’ve gotten to attend LEAN training and hospital rounding to gain exposure on the hospital side of UI Health Care.
Sending out my first set of mail correspondence to over 100 hospitals & clinics in Iowa
