The HMP Fellowship Fair

Image
By: David Nelson As a part of the Professional Development Seminar, the first year MHA class had the privilege of welcoming back several alum's of the program to discuss their experiences in both internships and fellowships. This Fellowship Fair brought together alums from all across the country and gave the first year class the opportunity to hear more about what they could expect and what they could to do to best prepare for fellowships. In kicking off the Fellowship Fair, a panel of alumni discussed their experiences in their summer internships and their subsequent fellowships. The panel touched on many important lessons and skill sets they felt the first year class should try to develop, which included, but was not limited to, time management, communication skills, networking, and work-life balance.  Following the panel discussion, the class had the chance to interact in small groups with the alums and to talk more about what the class could to do make the most

First Year Class Trip-Chicago

By: Bryson Kruthoff As we reach the beginning of the end of our first year, working hard to complete our papers, projects, and presentations, we were permitted a brief respite in the form of a class trip to the city of Chicago. Similar to our first semester trip to Des Moines and Omaha, our visit was intended to provide context to our in-class topics, broadening our knowledge base as we transition into our summer internships. We were exposed to a broad range of health care institutions, allowing for a well-rounded learning environment, and a great educational experience. Our trip began Wednesday morning with a stop at the American Hospital Association where we were able to learn and discuss the issues facing hospitals today, and how the Association is helping members navigate various changes in the industry. We had the pleasure of interacting with George Bergstrom, who graduated from the program in 1974, and holds the position of Vice President for Member Relations. Membership

First-year students of the University of Iowa Master of Healthcare Administration program had the pleasure of having Shane Cerone and Chris Klitgaard, both alumni of the program, come help us improve our presentation and speaking skills.  After breakfast and an introductory session, Mr. Cerone and Mr. Klitgaard each took half the class for an interactive, hands-on workshop on presentation skills. Our respective alumnus gave us tips and answered our questions before moving onto our first exercise, a 90-second introduction of ourselves. Each student’s presentation was recorded and after the entire group was done presenting, the recordings were played back.    As each student’s recording was being played back, Mr. Cerone and Mr. Klitgaard, along with fellow students in the group, gave them valu
