Summer Internships: Geisinger Health System

By Larissa Luckel  It’s hard to believe there are only two weeks of summer left until school starts!  Unfortunately, this means there is even less time left at my internship.  This summer, I have been interning at Geisinger Health System in northeast Pennsylvania.  Founded in 1915, Geisinger Health System is the nation’s largest rural health care system and has recently gained national recognition for its ability to provide high-quality care at costs below average.  Myself and John Heineman, fellow Iowa MHA/MPH student It is a very exciting time to be with Geisinger and I am trying to soak in every bit of knowledge that I can.  I have learned a lot about their innovative care delivery models, such as ProvenCare (the “warranty”) and ProvenHealth Navigator, and have been involved in many meetings about upcoming projects with CMMI (Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation) and PCORI (Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute).   Geisinger has recently merged with s

By Darcelle Skeete I am a legal intern at Iowa Hospital Association (‘IHA’) in Des Moines, Iowa. This is my second internship this summer ( I worked as a Law Clerk at the United States Attorney’s Office in Miami before).    The Iowa Hospital Association is an organization that represents Iowa hospitals and supports them in achieving their missions/goals through health advocacy and education as well as providing resourceful information.   As a legal intern I work with both of IHA’s General Counsels.  My responsibilities include  reviewing and streamlining IHA Affiliate Group bylaws .  IHA's Affiliate Groups offer specialized learning and networking opportunities for a variety of Iowa healthcare professionals. There are twelve groups in total.  In addition, I am  developing Sexual harassment and Employment discrimination training for IHA employees as well as updating and expanding IHA’s  Guide to Public Hospitals . I attended an Iowa Nonprofit Collaborative committee meet

By Connie Lee Hello! I am Connie Lee, interning at the Division office of TriStar Health System, located in Brentwood, TN. TriStar is comprised of 18 hospitals across three states – Tennessee, Kentucky, and Georgia. The system is part of Hospital Corporation of America (HCA).   My preceptors are the Vice President of Performance Management and the Director of Project Management. Accordingly, I have been focused around strategic planning from a system level. The main project I've been tasked with is to create a market analysis of TriStar and our competitors that will be used to carry forward with the Nashville market’s 2013 business planning. This project as well as my internship will culminate with me attending the 2 day planning meeting.   I have also been given the opportunity to work toward succession planning on the Director level within TriStar. I have spent a week acting in the capacity of decision support, which allowed me to attend a quarterly review with ou
