Reflections from MHA 2019 Orientation Week

Image
Compiled by: Mackenzie Schutz (MHA ’19) “The first day of orientation for the incoming MHA Class of 2019 included several introductions, an overview of MHA coursework and field trips, and an abundance of conversation. By the second day of orientation, our cohort had started to bond! Angie and Jay of the UI Adventure Challenge Course greeted the class with open arms and contagious energy and positivity. The first obstacle involved getting the cohort to stand on a tiny square platform without anyone falling off. We had a few minutes to decide how to complete the challenge and decided we would link arms and everyone would step up in unison. This was the simplest challenge of the day, but one of the most meaningful for me. The brief act of stepping up together made me realize that we already trusted one another and truly symbolized partnerships and lifelong friendships in the making.” -Hannah Fink (MHA ’19)             “The challenge course put us

Summer Internship: JPS Health Network

By: Sasha Manouchehripour (MHA '18) Greetings from Cowtown! This summer I have had an amazing opportunity to intern at JPS Health Network in Fort Worth, Texas. JPS is a 537-bed hospital located in the heart of Fort Worth. We are a Level 1 trauma center and the county hospital, so we provide care to those who have nowhere else to go. A large portion of our patient population is uninsured, but we still provide excellent care! JPS was recently nominated as a Top 100 place to work in Dallas-Fort Worth, and were voted as one of the Top 150 Places to Work by Modern Healthcare. My preceptor, Kathleen Whelan, is the Vice President of Clinical Operations. She has been a wonderful resource to me. One of the greatest things about JPS is our leadership team. These three rules are practiced in o

I am writing to you from Kamogawa, Japan where I am just finishing up this portion of my three-month internship with Kameda Medical Center.   My time here in Japan has been eye-opening in both an educational and cultural sense.   While I am currently here in the far west part of the main island, my journey in Japan started across the bay in Tokyo with Nihon Keiei.   Nihon Keiei is a healthcare consulting firm with around 30% of the domestic market as a client. During my time in Tokyo, I conducted site visits to several healthcare facilities including a long-term care hospital, psychiatric hospital, community hospitals, and more.   These facilities were located all across the Honshu island including Fukushima, Nagano, Nasu, and other organizations around Tokyo.   In addition to the site visits, I have helped Nihon Keiei in their application for the 2020 Tok
