Reflections from MHA 2019 Orientation Week
Compiled by: Mackenzie Schutz
(MHA ’19)
“The first day of orientation
for the incoming MHA Class of 2019 included several introductions, an overview
of MHA coursework and field trips, and an abundance of conversation. By the
second day of orientation, our cohort had started to bond! Angie and Jay of the
UI Adventure Challenge Course greeted the class with open arms and contagious
energy and positivity. The first obstacle involved getting the cohort to stand
on a tiny square platform without anyone falling off. We had a few minutes to
decide how to complete the challenge and decided we would link arms and
everyone would step up in unison.
This was the simplest
challenge of the day, but one of the most meaningful for me. The brief act of
stepping up together made me realize that we already trusted one another and
truly symbolized partnerships and lifelong friendships in the making.”

“The challenge course put us in several
awkward positions where we had no other choice but to communicate and problem-solve
with our classmates.” –Garret Danelz (MHA ’19)
“I need to make a good first impression on my
fellow classmates, I really hope I don’t fall and land face first!” –Jonathan
Ortega (MHA ’19)
“My face is a possible expression of how
prepared I am for the coming semester – thankfully I have Kenzie to remind me
that it’ll all be okay!” –Ben Mohr (MHA ’19)
“Leaning on and trusting each other already!” –
Ashley Holston (MHA ’19)
As a cohort, we all
agreed that the Challenge Course was an excellent icebreaker and experiential
learning opportunity. We anticipate many challenges in our first semester that,
like the Challenge Course, will encourage us to work together and problem-solve.
We couldn’t be more excited – here’s to a wonderful journey ahead!” – Mackenzie
Schutz (MHA ’19)
