Assjad (AJ) Haj (MHA '23): Deloitte

Hello from Chicago! This summer, I had the opportunity to intern for 10 weeks as a Summer Associate at Deloitte. I was assigned to the Chicago office and moved to the city for the summer, luckily, I found an apartment just a 10–15-minute walk to office so it has given me the chance to not only explore the city but meet new friends! The summer has been filled with multiple networking opportunities, professional growth, and the chance to work on an impactful project that aligns to my career goals. For the summer, I was staffed on a non-public joint venture between an academic medical center (AMC) and a community hospital. The AMC has reached a point where they are at a capacity constraint and require relief for their inpatients and an additional care destination for their patient pool. On the other hand, the community hospital is looking to utilize their excess capacity across various service lines and grow. Together this will not only benefit both entities but promote accessible afforda

Paul Knocke (MHA '23): Bothwell Regional Health Center

Greetings from Sedalia, Missouri! This summer I have been lucky to serve as the administrative intern at Bothwell Regional Health Center (BRHC). BRHC is a 108-bed hospital located in Mid-Missouri, roughly an hour and a half from Kansas City, and one hour from the Lake of the Ozarks. Along with the main hospital campus BRHC has roughly 25 clinics located in Sedalia proper, and the surrounding communities. The hospital offers numerous service lines including a robust cancer center, orthopedics, and an emergency department that sees 25,000 visits a year. Many of you have probably met my preceptor, Lori Wightman, somewhere along the way. Lori began her career as an infectious disease nurse, but that is by no means the breadth of her knowledge. Alongside her career in healthcare as a nurse and CEO, Lori has also held positions as a political campaign manager and general manager of a professional basketball team. I learned quickly that Lori leads with a high level of energy and passion, an

Eleanor Jansen (MHA '23): University of Iowa Hospital & Clinics - Strategy

Image
This summer I've had the opportunity to intern at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC) under Chief Strategy Officer Tim Kan. Tim and his team are responsible for the strategic vision of the organization both internally and across the state of Iowa. From day one, the Growth Team has kindly welcomed and incorporated me in many of their discussions around key service line expansion, regional growth, and provider relations. It has been a privilege to observe how leaders within the organization think about expanding UIHC's reach across the state to bring care to those who need it. Since starting this experience in May, I've worked on several individual projects and provided support across many ongoing initiatives. One of my main tasks for the summer involved a regional market analysis for dermatological services. I evaluated supply and demand for services in different regions of the state and proposed additional provider placements for FY2023. I also had the oppor

Nick Phillips (MHA '23): UIHC - Orthopedics & OHSC Lab

Hi all from Iowa City! This summer I have had a unique opportunity to intern with the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Orthopedics as well as the OHSC lab within the university. It has been great to see both a clinical setting and a research side of administration. It has allowed me to gain insights in an area that is not typically common as well as learning the clinical side of administration. I am fortunate to have a couple different preceptors that I report to. Within Orthopedics I am working under Mark Mason who is the services manager and deals with a lot of the finances. I also work under Mary Greve who is a physician assistant as well as supervisor within Ortho. Both have obtained there MHA from the university of Iowa! At OHSC I work with Kelly Andringa who deals with the finances of research funding and obtaining grants. I have been able to work on various projects throughout the summer. The main projects I am working on within Orthopedics include a room turn rate pr

Dhuha Tawil (MHA '23): Medirevv

Hello from Coralville! This summer, I have had an opportunity of a lifetime by witnessing the final merger and acquisition of UIowa MHA’s beloved Medirevv and 13 other organizations. Medirevv has had a Uiowa intern every year since 2007 and sadly I will be the last intern of this long tradition. Medirevv founded by Chris Klitgaard, a program alum, is a revenue cycle management company that has expanded across the nation exponentially over the years.  Using innovative and progressive approaches with technology and cultural work management techniques, Medirevv changed the way traditional end to end revenue cycle management was done for healthcare and its partnership with hospitals, large physician groups, and health systems. As you can imagine, end to end revenue cycle management is complex and I have been exposed to a breadth of departments like patient pay solutions, client delivery, insurance receivables follow up and medical coding services. In 2020, one of America’s lar
