Cocktail Hour Etiquette Training

Image
By: Colin Carroll In February, the Iowa Student Association of Healthcare Leaders organized a cocktail hour etiquette event, hosted by Iowa MHA alum, Todd Linden, and his wife, Angela. MHA students were invited to Todd and Angela’s WineStyles Tasting Station in Cedar Rapids for an evening of wine tasting and education on proper cocktail hour etiquette. Students were given the opportunity to taste four different wines throughout the evening. Todd provided instruction on proper tasting technique, including how to hold the glass and aerate the wine. Students learned that the proper way to experience wine is to first look, then smell, and lastly, taste. Throughout the evening, Todd provided background knowledge on the wine, as well as traditional food pairings. Cheese and meat samples were provided for an authentic tasting experience. Students also received a crash course in cocktail hour customs and appropriate decorum. The discussion included an informative question and answe

Program Updates: March 2017

By: Betsy Winter Midterms have been taken, and Spring Break has passed. 2017 is flying by! Last semester was jammed packed with events, most of which are chronicled in earlier posts. The first half of this semester had lots and lots of admissions activity! The MHA program held four Interview Days. The PhD program held numerous Skype interviews. The MS and MPH application deadline is April 15, but our policy programs are reviewing applications as they come in. It is all very exciting! The semester is not anywhere near over, and as we head into the last half, many of our students are focused on one very important event – graduation! This year, we will celebrate graduates from all of our programs: MHA, Executive MHA track, PhD, MPH in Policy, and, for the first time, MS in Health Policy! Lots to do before then, though! The 1st year MHA students will take another class trip up to Northeast Iowa. The Student Leadership Council is planning a Fellowship Fair for 1st-year MHA students

GA Positions for Iowa MHA Students at All-Time High

Image
The number of GA positions held by Iowa MHA students has reached an all-time high of 28, double the number last academic year. These prized positions not only allow graduate students to gain practice and research experience in health management and policy, but are a great recruitment tool for the Program given they come with partial tuition, fees and a monthly stipend during the academic year. While a few of these positions are funded by the Program for recruitment purposes each year, most are sponsored through collaborations across University of Iowa Health Care. Others are possible through alumni support. For a number of years now, Chris Klitgaard, MHA ‘99, President and Founder of MediRevv, Inc, has helped to sponsor a GA position for the MHA Program. Second year student Kristin Bramow has held that position during the current academic year. Most recently, Steve, MA '84, and Mary Kay Corbeil (pictured above) endowed a GA position in perpetuity. Second year student Joe Ki

Presenting the "Iowa MHA Huddle" E-Bulletin

Image
After receiving a half-dozen entries during a contest among the MHA students for naming of the new quarterly e-bulletin for the Program, Bailey Price, a candidate for the MHA degree, May ’17, won the prize for suggesting the winning entry. Dr. Gentry had an opportunity to chat briefly with Bailey about “The Huddle.”  Dan: Congratulations Bailey on having your entry selected for the title of the new quarterly e-bulletin for our Iowa MHA program. It was hands-down the overwhelming choice. Personally, because of my own work in the patience experience and environment of care, I loved it immediately. Where did you get the idea, what inspired you?  Bailey: It was such a nice surprise to have my entry chosen! Initially thinking that the title of the newsletter would have “HMP” in the name, I brainstormed healthcare-related words that started with the letter “h” because I’m a big fan of alliteration. Having discussed team and department huddles in various classes in the MHA program, the
