Megan Berst (MHA '22): UAB Medicine - Inpatient Operations

Image
Hello from Birmingham, Alabama! This summer, I have worked alongside the Inpatient Leadership team at UAB Medicine, directly under the mentorship of the Vice President of Clinical Operations and Chief Facilities Officer. As a large academic medical center, UAB Medicine houses 1,207-licensed-beds and is a Level 1 trauma center that provides healthcare services for more than 1.6 million patients annually.        UAB’s executive leadership team has been incredibly welcoming. I was privileged to have one-on-one meetings with over twenty executives, including the CEO, Associate VP for Transplant Services, VP of Clinical Operations, Associate VP of Emergency Services, CNO, VP of Supply Chain and Support Services, Chief Clinical Transformation Officer, and CFO. I am also very grateful for the shadowing opportunities we were able to have in the clinical and support services units, which included observing managers in guest services, pharmacy rounding, EVS, radiology, the main campus ED (

Emaan Ahmad (MHA '22): University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC) - Clinical Care Operations

Hello from Iowa City!  Although I have only been at UIHC for a month, I have seen many parts of healthcare that have piqued my interest. As soon as I started, I was invited to observe a task force to improve the security of the ER. Since an incident prompted this task force, the team met every day for two weeks to develop a proposal for long-term changes, needs, and expectations presented to the CEO. Since I did not know how the ED looked at that time, I coordinated with a nurse manager to walk some of us interns to go around and see the potential security hazards of the ED. It was fascinating to see the teamwork so efficiently to come up with a solution. I have also been the lead on a project where we review the Executive Leadership Academy to see how past participants feel about the program and if it was beneficial. I created a Qualtrics survey (which was easier than I thought) and sent that out. I will be giving a presentation on the results to my preceptor, Dr. Theresa Brennan. I

Arika Allen (MHA '22): UNC Health - Strategic Planning

Image
Hello from North Carolina!  I am currently in Chapel Hill, NC working with the strategic planning department at UNC Health. I can’t believe it, but I am halfway through my internship. This summer has flown by, and I have enjoyed every minute of it. My summer looks a little different from most internships as I have been mostly virtual while getting to be in-person once a week to hear different leaders speak and to tour the UNC facilities. Due to COVID, there were observations of who needs to be at the hospital vs. who can still stay home and continue to work. My department has been innovative in working from home and has actually increased their work production by working from home. Strategic Planning is mainly all big picture and where the hospital should be in the future.  This summer, I wanted to gain a better understanding of the big picture processes and the numbers that affect what hospitals do and the direction that they go (shout-out to Dan Shane for all the analytics skills).
