Iowa Executive Healthcare Symposium 2014

The 36th Annual Iowa Executive Healthcare Symposium took place October 30-31st. The Symposium provided students an opportunity to hear lectures on prominent health care topics and to meet alumni and executives across the country. The two day event featured two keynote speakers and six other workshop presentations for students and executives.

Symposium kicked off on Thursday afternoon at the College of Public Health building with William Jessee as the keynote speaker. Dr. Jessee gave a lecture on integrated healthcare strategies followed by a Q & A. A reception followed in the Kinnick Stadium press box which was a great opportunity for students to meet executives and learn about their experiences in the field.

Symposium continued on Friday at the Sheraton Hotel in downtown Iowa City. The morning started with two workshop sessions each with three different topics to choose from. The topics ranged from population health strategies to successful physician integration into healthcare systems. Following the workshops Dike Drummond, CEO of TheHappyMD.com gave an interactive presentation on collaborative leadership in times of change. The presentation focused on how health care executives can work to improve their relationships with physicians and the benefits for their organizations.

This year’s Symposium offered students and healthcare executives to decide which breakout   Along with deciding what topics they wanted to learn more information on, students were given a list of attendees so they could do some research on their respective organizations and network with them during the event. We had a great turnout for Symposium this year, with over 187 students and healthcare executives attending this year. This was a great opportunity for students to network with practicing healthcare executives.
workshop presentations they would like to attend. I attended the Health Policy and Updates workshop and the Population Health Strategies in Rural Hospitals workshop. The workshops were a great experience for students to get an outside perspective on major health care initiatives.

A thank you to all of those who helped make this a great experience for students and executives alike, especially our presenters. We hope to see everyone back next year!
