Caroline Carter- Intermountain Health: Logan Regional Hospital (MHA '26)

Hello from Logan, Utah! This summer, I had the amazing opportunity to spend the summer with Intermountain Health at Logan Regional Hospital. My time was spent with the CEO of the hospital, Brandon McBride and the Hospital Executive Team. Intermountain Health is a not-for-profit health system made up of 33 hospitals and 400 + clinics over their 3 regions. Logan Regional Hospital is a 148-bed hospital located an hour away from Salt Lake City!

From the start, I felt Intermountain’s values through the people I worked with. Their mission—to help people live the healthiest lives possible—is evident in everything they do, whether through daily huddles, caregiver meetings, or regional board retreats. Teamwork, empathy, and clinical excellence weren’t just words; they were deeply embedded into the culture. I was especially inspired by how passionate and fulfilled the caregivers were in their work.

I had multiple projects that I was working on throughout the summer. First off, I worked on decreasing readmission rates across the hospital. During this project, I led data analysis of readmission rates to identify causes and recommend process improvements to reduce future readmissions. This project showed me how valuable it is to ensure all of the key players are at the table when making hospital-wide implementations. Secondly, I worked on creating a wheelchair process for the hospital to ensure patients and caregivers have the resources when they need it most. During this project, I led a volunteer team in the collection, labeling, and strategic distribution of 70 wheelchairs across 12 hospital departments. Lastly, I worked on caregiver engagement scores across Logan Regional. I focused on the higher engagement scores and the lower engagement scores. From this data, I helped organize a caregiver think tank to ensure that the caregivers with the lower engagement scores are getting tips from others.

Beyond project work, Brandon prioritized my professional development through immersive experiences. One highlight was attending the North Market Region Board Retreat in scenic Alta, Utah. Over two days, I witnessed high-level strategic discussions that shape the broader Canyons Region Market. It was a valuable opportunity to learn, network with other Intermountain Health interns, and connect with executive leaders across the system. Another highlight was a 13-mile team hike with the Logan Regional Executive Team. Even though there was a lot of fun happening—it was a full-day experience focused on team bonding and leadership development.

Outside of work, I took full advantage of being in Utah! I explored Logan, Park City, Salt Lake City, and parts of Idaho. My weekends were often spent hiking, soaking up the outdoors, visiting friends, and enjoying everything the region had to offer. Overall, this summer was an unforgettable experience. I'm deeply grateful for the opportunity to work with such dedicated professionals and for the friendships I made along the way—many of whom quickly became like family.
