ISAHL Update

Iowa Student Association of Healthcare Leaders (ISAHL) has had an exciting 2016-2017 school year so far! We have been very busy participating in events that support our three pillars of professional development, civic engagement, and member relations. This past fall we raised a record amount of donations at our annual ISAHL Golf Outing from players, alumni, faculty, and local business owners. These funds are being utilized to assist 38 students with their registration expenses this March at ACHE Congress in Chicago. This will be the largest number of students we have had in attendance and we are excited to learn more about the current events and challenges facing the healthcare field from executives across the nation! This will also be an amazing opportunity for students to interact with Iowa alumni who will also attend the healthcare conference.
We have offered our members unique experiences such as mock interviews with alumni, etiquette guidelines for a formal cocktail hour and dinner, and a presentation from our ACHE regent. We know these will be crucial for setting Iowa HMP students apart from others as we interview for internships and begin work in fellowship placements. We have continued to support our community through philanthropic events such as Girls on the Run, Habitat for Humanity, blanket tying for pediatric inpatients at the Stead Family Children’s Hospital, and card creation for patients and families at the Ronald McDonald House. In order to foster life-long relationships with the first and second year cohorts, we have hosted many social events outside of the classroom! These events have included a Cedar Rapids Rough Riders hockey game, Thanksgiving potluck, progressive dessert tasting, pizza dinner with students and families, and apple picking at the nearby orchard. One of our favorite events is coming up this April as we celebrate the end of a successful school year with our annual semi-formal at a local restaurant!
We have been lucky this year to have such incredible first and second year cohorts that have been dedicated and enthusiastic about being involved with the success and advancement of ISAHL. The executive board has been creative and motivated to not only leave a lasting impression on current students, but also the HMP Department as a whole. We are eager to start the transition to next year’s executive board and we are confident there will continue to be additional activities that help to fill the gaps in our growth as future healthcare leaders!

GO HAWKEYES!
