Varun Korutla, Nihon Keiei Consulting Group & Kameda Medical Center (MHA '25)

Kon’nichiwa from Japan! What an incredible journey it’s been as an administrative intern this summer, having the amazing opportunity to intern at both Nihon Keiei Consulting Group and Kameda Medical Center. This summer has proven exceptionally memorable, providing me with a rare mix of career development and deep cultural engagement that will hold a special place in my heart forever.

During my brief stint at Nihon Keiei, I immersed myself in comprehensive research and presentations, focused on understanding how cultural values, respective of the United States and Japan, influence the delivery of quality medical services. This project was instrumental in generating strategic insights and practical recommendations aimed at harmonizing healthcare practices across these nations’ healthcare systems; thereby, bolstering Nihon Keiei’s client engagement, competitive edge, and industry knowledge. Beyond expanding my own understanding and offering a fresh perspective on healthcare dynamics, I also had the opportunity to deliver weekly presentations to a senior consultant, contributing actively to ongoing discussions and advancements in healthcare.

One of the highlights of my experience at Nihon Keiei Consulting Group was the incredible opportunity to interview a diverse range of board members and directors, including the CEO and executive directors, as well as department heads within the healthcare sector. These interviews provided me with invaluable insights into their roles, career trajectories, company goals, and leadership philosophies. Understanding their perspectives was not only enlightening but also deeply impactful for my own professional growth and aspirations.

Beyond my work at the consulting firm, I had the privilege of immersing myself in the rich tapestry of Japan’s healthcare and cultural landscape. I gained firsthand insights into the Japanese healthcare system by visiting Aijinkai Hospital & Aijinkai Rehabilitation Center, where I witnessed advanced medical practices and patient-centered care methods. Outside of the internship experience, my exploration extended to the cultural heart of Japan as I visited numerous shrines throughout the Kyoto region, marveled at the world’s largest aquarium in Osaka, savored the bustling streets and diverse cuisine of Osaka, and delved into the myriad attractions Tokyo offers – from shopping in Ginza and Shibuya and culinary delights to its vibrant cultural and architectural sceneries. These experiences not only enriched my understanding of Japan’s healthcare practices, but also deepened my appreciation for its rich traditions and modern innovations.

While my administrative internship at Kameda Medical Center has only begun, I’m eagerly anticipating the outcomes of our research project, focusing on the development of quality indicators that aid in effectiveness and financial viability, as well as the valuable experiences and lessons that lie ahead. Tokyo and Kamogawa offer endless opportunities for exploration, and I can’t wait to immerse myself further in these vibrant cities.

I’m deeply filled with gratitude for the enriching experiences and incredible individuals I’ve encountered at Nihon Keiei and Kameda Medical Center. I eagerly look forward to continuous learning and integrating these experiences to propel my career forward.
