Hi Everyone! I am spending my summer working as an administrative
intern at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, under the direction of Sabi
Singh, Co-Chief Operating Officer. UIHC is a 729-bed hospital and is Iowa's
only comprehensive academic medical center and a regional referral center. In
the past fiscal year, UIHC recorded more than 977,000 clinic visits, including
more than 159,000 visits outside Iowa City at outreach and UI Family Care sites.
We provide first-rate primary care and offer services in more than 200 specialties
and receive referrals around the country. Today,
UIHC is a part of University of Iowa Health Care, a fully-integrated academic
medical center that also includes the Carver College of Medicine and UI
Physicians. Each play a unique role in fulfilling shared missions of patient
care, research and education. Simply stated, our mission is: Changing Medicine.
Changing Lives.®
My biggest project this summer is working alongside a
multidisciplinary team (consisting of professionals from Operations Excellence,
Central Sterilizing Services, Clinical Staff, IT, Project Management, MOR staff
and Administration) to improve our supply management system workflow throughout
our main operating rooms. Through our efforts we expect to see: lowered costs,
increased revenue through accurate charge capture, improved workflow,
simplified and accurate reporting, reduction in turnover time, and, in general,
greater efficiency.
Other projects I've worked on include the following:
- Analysis
of the ACA and the effects on AMCs, the State of Iowa and the people of Iowa
for the ASG Program, a group of international orthopaedic surgeons.
- Preparing
the orientation and welcoming of UIHC’s incoming Residents and Fellows
- Financial
analysis of top/bottom performing physicians of 11 different service lines
- Financial
analysis and performance evaluation of 5 departments and divisions by surgeries
- Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center’s patient satisfaction
analysis
- Bone Marrow Transplant market and data analysis
- Providing data for and partaking in the Interventional
Molecular & Diagnostic Team of UIHC
- Assisting in creating monthly departmental review
dashboards for UI Health Care leadership
- Analyze US News & World Report’s adult specialty
rankings of UIHC to identify opportunities for improvement
Outside of my internship, I keep active by working out, and playing in
Iowa City’s summer ultimate frisbee league on Monday and Wednesday evenings. On
weekends, I may be on the road to hit up music festivals and to assist on filming
acoustic sessions of bands for a start-up production company.
