Iowa Executive Healthcare Symposium 2015
By: Catherine Gehlsen
The 37th annual Iowa Healthcare Executive Symposium, “Preparing for (More) Financial Risk” was held on September 24th, 2015. It provided students with numerous opportunities to hear different lectures on exciting healthcare topics and to network with alumni and healthcare executives from across the country.
The symposium kicked off with a Speed Networking event. This gave the new Health Management and Policy graduate students the opportunity to network with different healthcare executives. It also gave them the opportunity to learn new networking techniques. The students that did participate all said that it was very beneficial for their future careers. This was followed by two keynote speakers: Ray Hershman and Tom Manak. Ray Hershman’s lecture was on Value Based Reimbursement: Succeeding with Payments Based on Attributed Lives. He is widely known for his leadership experience in information and technology to enable organizational change in healthcare. He has supported large employers, healthcare coalitions, government agencies, and national and regional healthcare insurance organizations in healthcare consumerism, provider performance measurement, and transparency/market adoption of new innovative approaches to improve the quality of care and lower overall costs.
Tom Manak’s lecture followed Mr. Hershman’s. He presented on Building and Retaining a Member Population. Mr. Manak has worked for large national consulting firms and was one of the founders and owners of a consulting firm based in the western suburbs of Chicago with clients spanning across the United States. His experience includes strategic and business planning, medical staff and physician relationship development, certificate of need, and finance and facility planning. Both speakers provided students and healthcare executives with very valuable information on two huge healthcare topics.
Following these keynote speakers, there were two workshops. The first was titled “The Future of Healthcare Financing-Succeeding with Payments based on Attributed Lives”. The panelists, all healthcare executives of large organizations, provided valuable information to the students and other healthcare executives present. The second was titled “Strategic Marketing: Winning the Battle for Markets and Share-Building and Retaining a Member Population”. These panelists also provided great information. Following these two workshops was a symposium reception at the UI Athletics Hall of Fame. This provided students and executives the opportunity to network and learn more about different healthcare organizations.
On Friday, the ISAHL Golf Outing was held. This was another opportunity for students to network with healthcare executives. This experience was valued by all students and everyone is looking forward to next year’s outing. Overall, the 37th annual symposium was a huge success. We had a great turnout and the students were able to improve their networking skills with healthcare executives. It was also a great way for students to get outside knowledge on major healthcare topics.
A huge thank you to all of those who helped make this year’s symposium a great success, especially the presenters. We hope to see everyone return for next year’s symposium!
