Tom McAllister (MHA ’24): University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics: Ophthalmology Operations
Greetings from Iowa City!
This summer, I have been enjoying my time with the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics Ophthalmology Department under the direct mentorship of Denise Rettig. Denise is the Clinical Department Administrator for the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences. She is an alum of the University of Iowa MHA program and the MBA program.
I joined UIHC on June 1st. While I have only been a part of the community for a short period of time, U have been able to be included in the culture of UIHC and join in on several projects. My main project has been creating a clinical trial step-by-step “playbook” to help ensure that new trials begin in a uniform way. This has involved meeting with key players in the trial process, mapping out instructions on beginning a project, and coordinating with the team on how to format instructions. I have also been working closely with Matt Browning. Matt Is the Constituent Relations Specialist for the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences. I have been helping Matt update the fellow and resident alumni records to ensure the community remains engaging.
I have also been able to attend a variety of seminars and rounding series hosted by UIHC. These have been a great way to see the UIHC health system outside of the department that I usually work within. I have also been a part of the annual space survey project, which has consisted of visiting twelve on-campus and off-site departments to evaluate the space utilization and discuss any changes to how spaces are used, or any updates to office residents.
Outside of the internship, I have kept busy. I have played a lot of golf with friends, spent a lot of time outside with my dog, and have had a few cookouts. I have watched a lot of sports and spent some quality time with friends and family. This time has really flown by, and I cannot wait to see what is in store for me during the rest of my internship. I have learned a lot so far, and working for Denise has been a great experience.
