Summer Internship: Southwest Healthcare System

By: Jeremy Murdock

This summer I have been working with the executive team of Southwest Healthcare System, a division of Universal Health Services in Murrieta, California. I work between two hospitals that operate under the same license, Rancho Springs Medical Center and Inland Valley Medical Center. Rancho Springs (pictured below) Medical Center is a 120-bed facility with an amazing Women’s Center, a da Vinci robotic surgery suite in addition to having an 11-bed NICU where Southwest has partnered with Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego for patient care. Inland Valley Medical Center resides 5 miles from Rancho Springs and has 132 beds and is the region’s only level 2 trauma center.

Currently I am working with the Director of Nursing at Inland Valley Medical Center to transition their wound care clinic from an in-house department to a 3rd party vendor that will co-manage the clinic and hopefully continue to grow and develop the service line. I am also getting exposed to supply chain functions in a PAR optimization project with the ICU staff that has been very interesting thus far and should result in some positive outcomes in happier staff and more efficient/JIT ordering for certain ICU supplies. I am planning a “5S” project with the ED supply areas at Rancho Springs and I have already worked with the ED Manager to develop a dashboard displaying the critical metrics her staff and department are accountable for that they can monitor in weekly and monthly staff meetings. I have been asked to work on a few process improvement projects in pharmacy and nursing that will keep me busy throughout the rest of the summer besides attending meetings with the executives and observing robotic surgery cases and riding with an EMS team for a night. The CEO and COO I have been working with this summer have been tremendous preceptors for me and I have had a blast working with them and their staff this summer.

It has been a fun-filled summer being back ‘home’ in southern California, spending lots of time with family and friends and getting down to the beach and to the golf course as often as possible.
