Summer Internship: University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC)

By: Vanessa Savage

Hello from Pittsburgh! I have had the privilege to intern with University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) for the last 10 weeks, and it has been everything I could have hoped for and more. UPMC is an Integrated Delivery and Finance Health System comprised of four major areas: provider services, insurance services, international provider services, and enterprise services. My internship is focused primarily within provider services, specifically here in Pittsburgh at Magee-Womens Hospital which is one of 40 UPMC hospitals across Pennsylvania, New York, and Maryland. Magee-Womens provides a wide variety of services to its patient population, however it is best known for delivering over 10,000 babies annually in addition to caring for about 1,500 critically-ill newborns in the NICU.

My role this summer is focused primarily with University of Pittsburgh Physicians (UPP), the physicians’ group working within UPMC in conjunction with the University of Pittsburgh. The branch of UPP that I worked with included all Women’s Health physicians who treated patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Working alongside my preceptor and the Women’s Health administrative team, I contributed to various projects throughout the summer. One of the larger projects I worked on was a justification for a new Advanced Practice Provider (APP) and Nurse for the Endometriosis Center here at Magee. This project consisted of reviewing relevant Epic data, financial summaries, and current research on Endometriosis to justify two additional providers in order to increase volume and improve patient access as a whole. Another project I worked on was an overview of recent Press Ganey survey data to see where individual practices and the department as a whole can improve in the context of the patient experience.

Outside of work, I have had an absolute blast living in Pittsburgh for the summer! Alongside my fellow co-interns, we have gotten to participate in lots of socially-distant activities like tubing along a lazy river and playing spikeball in the park almost every weekend, always making sure to go to a different restaurant for take-out to try all the amazing food Pittsburgh has to offer. While this summer has been wildly different from anything we could have expected, I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here at UPMC and Pittsburgh as a whole and am so thankful for this incredible opportunity.

Stay safe and as always, Go Hawks!
