Summer Internship: University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics
By: Jayden Snyder (MHA ‘20)
This summer, I have had the privilege of interning at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics (UIHC). This system serves as the only comprehensive academic medical center in the state of Iowa.
UIHC is nationally ranked, has 811 beds, and over 200 medical specialties.
During my internship I have been able to work with the Chief Operating Officer of UIHC. My projects have included decreasing turnover time in the catheterization labs, expanding digestive health procedures with anesthesia from one day per week to five, working with the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center to streamline molecular testing, strategic planning for oncology services, and process improvement for digestive health. Each project has helped me to gain new experiences and tools. My favorite part of the projects has been working on process improvement and learning new Lean management techniques.
One of the great things about the internship with UIHC is that you get to see and work with other interns. As a group of interns, we met with different department leaders and round with their areas. Some of these areas included environmental services, engineering, supply chain, legal, quality improvement, and others. One of the unique areas was the OR, where we were able to scrub in and watch a surgery.
Summer in the Iowa City area has been fantastic. The state is beautiful with green trees and green rolling hills everywhere. We had family visit and went to Lake MacBride where we enjoyed paddle boarding and the scenery. We also visited the Amana Colonies, which is a German town. We enjoyed a schnitzel sandwich, many flavored popcorns, and some delicious chocolates. Another place we visited was the Amish community in Kalona. We got to see people riding around in a horse and buggy, try some delicious Amish bread, cheese, and cinnamon rolls. One of the great things about being in Iowa City for the summer is that you are just a close trip away from many places. Taking advantage of this, we went to Guaranteed Rate Field to see the Chicago White Sox, and then to Miller Park to see the Milwaukee Brewers.
It has been a great summer in Iowa City and I feel lucky to have been part of such a great organization with great leaders.
