Summer Internship: Hennepin County Medical Center
By: Anna Saxon
Hello from the land of 10,000 lakes. I am spending my summer at Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC). It is a 455 bed, certified Level 1 Trauma Center, and designated safety net hospital located in the heart of downtown Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Some exciting things have been happening around here lately:
In addition to all of these exciting events, HCMC is in the middle of building a 377,000 square foot Ambulatory Outpatient Specialty Center, with a goal of improving access, enhancing operations, improving patient experience, and using the building as a vehicle for rebranding the system. I am working on a myriad of projects, including EHR, signage and wayfinding, billing naming standardization of the 47 clinics moving into the new building, reinventing content of the New Employee Orientation Compliance Training, data mining for an upcoming ambulatory visioning retreat, managing monthly exam room utilization data, and the creation of a standard operating procedure plan for all ambulatory clinics.

Some exciting things have been happening around here lately:
- The US Bank Stadium, located two blocks away, was recently finished and is hosting its first event at the end of July.
- HCMC began a joint venture with MVNA, a community health services organization.
- A former Emergency Medicine resident completed his training at NASA, spent 7 months aboard the International Space Station, and upon his return, came and spoke about the priceless education he received in his time at HCMC.

Outside of work, I have been
spending a lot of time with my family, golfing, and visiting the lakes as often
as I possibly can. I’m excited to get back to
Iowa City and hear about everyone’s summer experiences!
