Danny Bush (JD/MHA '22): McGuireWoods LLP
That’s right, Chicago is the healthcare epicenter of the Midwest. It boasts approximately 30,000 healthcare-related companies. It’s home to some of the largest health systems in the United States. Because of this, some of the country’s largest healthcare law firms call Chicago their home. I’ve had the pleasure of spending this summer with some of the brightest minds in healthcare law within the healthcare department at McGuireWoods LLP, a full-service law firm of 1,100 attorneys. My summer has allowed me to focus on my career passion: legal work in the healthcare industry. I’ve helped attorneys advise medical, dental, and vision providers with many of their legal needs. Much of my work comes from the burgeoning presence of private equity firms in the healthcare industry. These firms provide management services for consolidating medical practices, ambulatory surgery centers, and other healthcare entities. All of this, in turn, creates the need for transactional and regulatory legal work (my job [1]).
I chose to pursue a Master of Health Administration degree at Iowa in addition to my Juris Doctor degree to become a better healthcare attorney. I’m so glad for the background my MHA has given me! I have a leg up on other young attorneys because healthcare laws and regulations have a steep learning curve. Learning the business, laws, and regulations of healthcare and hospitals from executives in the industry has been a great help in providing legal counsel to healthcare executives and providers.

Oh, and my time in Chicago hasn’t been just work! I brought my wife, three-year-old daughter, and six-month-old son to the Irving Park neighborhood in Chicago. If we’re not working, then we’re out and about exploring the city, eating its food, and having fun.
