Summer Internship: UnityPoint Health - Des Moines

Image
By: Swati Panchal If I had to describe my feelings on the first day of my internship, I would say I was nervous, yet undeniably excited. Now, as I approach my 6 th week, I would say I am still excited and only nervous about how fast the time is going! In the first few days, I quickly learned that meetings would be the core of my days. From senior leadership meetings to wellness committee meetings, I learned about the many roles and functions within a hospital. As I worked towards familiarizing myself with the four hospitals in our region—Iowa Methodist, Methodist West, Iowa Lutheran, and Blank Children’s—I had the opportunity to be part of some exciting events. On June 8 th , Iowa Methodist opened their brand new Emergency Department. Upon my first visit, I thought, “Wow. This looks more like a hotel than an ED. This is even nicer than Grey’s Anatomy’s!” Actually, everything I have gotten to be a part of, from patient rounds to board meetings, has shown that UnityPoint Heal...

Summer Internship: Mercy Hospital Ada

Image
By: Matt Knoedel What a whirlwind 5 weeks it has been in Ada. In that short time, I have experienced many new things for the first time, and met some inspiring and amazing people. I feel like I have been welcomed by the people of Ada. Mercy Hospital Ada is a not-for-profit, acute care hospital located in Ada, Oklahoma. Lori Wightman, President of Mercy Hospital Ada and my preceptor, is providing strong leadership at the hospital, and it has been quite an experience to see her work. The hospital is part of the Mercy Health System, which spans from St. Louis in the East all the way to Oklahoma City in the West and includes 46 acute and specialty hospitals. Mercy can trace its roots back to Dublin, Ireland nearly 200 years ago, when Sister Catherine McAuley opened the first house of Mercy in 1827 to serve and heal those in need.   In 2016, Mercy was given a Truven award for being one of the top 5 health systems in the nation. I was fortunate enough to be able to attend a sys...

StoneCrest has 109 beds and is located just 25 minutes from the heart of Nashville in Rutherford County. To keep up with demand, StoneCrest is actively growing with the community and has several expansion projects currently underway. A major focus of mine this summer has been centered on spending as much time as I can in different departments, and understanding how they operate independently, as well as how they interact with other departments. I have had the privilege of spending time in environmental services, patient access, materials management, plant operations, surgery, imaging, and pharmacy, just to name a few. This has provided m...

I have been very fortunate to have already spent most of my experiences in healthcare with UIHC, so my internship with administration is truly rounding out my knowledge and experiences with the organization. My main project for the summer is assisting with the planning of a new observation unit, opening at the beginning of September. Construction is currently in process to transition rooms from the Helen K. Rossi Volunteer Guest House to patient rooms. I have included a couple of pictures showing the progress of the construction on the new unit. My involvement in the project so far has primarily been in the planning and coor...
